General Information

What is PlanetPlay?

PlanetPlay is a not-for-profit platform harnessing the power of games to address environmental challenges. Players can support green initiatives by purchasing PC games and digital items on our store, or by purchasing special in-game items in titles from our mobile game studio partners.

How does PlanetPlay work?

100% of PlanetPlay's profit after developer revenue share and transaction costs is donated to Gold Standard certified environmental projects, encompassing reforestation, cleaner energy, and water conservation. We generate revenue in the following ways:

  • PlanetPlay Marketplace: Browse our marketplace for top-rated PC games, bundles, gift cards and other items. Every purchase you make will contribute to green projects that help the planet. You can see the donation amount and the impact made directly on individual item pages.
  • In-Game Purchases: Play your favourite mobile titles and buy special green items in-game as part of our ongoing Make Green Moves campaign that supports environmental causes. Thanks to you, PlanetPlay will receive a donation from each download from our game studio partners!
  • Donations & Sponsorships: We regularly run special campaigns through which studios, publishers and other industry partners can donate directly to the green projects that PlanetPlay supports.

Why should I use PlanetPlay?

  • PlanetPlay sends 100% of its profits from game sales and in-game purchases after developer revenue share and transaction costs to certified environmental projects.
  • Our donations support critical sustainability projects like affordable clean energy, reforestation, and water conservation (see below).
  • PlanetPlay's impact is calculated scientifically by our green project partners and is Gold Standard Verified (see below), so you can be confident each purchase is making a real world difference.

Environmental & Nature Initiatives

What kind of environmental projects does PlanetPlay support?

We focus on projects that can create the most impact at scale. For example, while carbon capture is promising, it currently delivers limited results for a high cost, so we're not investing in it yet. Instead, we focus on solutions like clean cooking, reforestation, and cleaner energy, where the results are more immediate and proven.

How does PlanetPlay choose which environmental projects to support?

We follow clear selection criteria:

  • We work directly with the people delivering the project, not middlemen.
  • We choose projects that create impact across multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG): ideally five or more.
  • We look for efficiency: projects that deliver the biggest environmental benefit for the resources invested.
  • We take community benefits seriously: projects that create jobs or improve local lives are prioritised.

What checks does PlanetPlay carry out before supporting a project?

Every project goes through a three-layer governance process:

  • Management Review: PlanetPlay's leadership team gathers data and checks alignment with our criteria (listed above).
  • Risk Committee Review and External consultation: Our Risk Committee is an important function of PlanetPlay's Board of Directors. The Risk Committee consists of individuals with rich relevant experience. Simultaneously the Risk Committee will consult external professional consultancies or organisations with expertise in the specific area of the green project (e.g. clean cookstoves or reforestation). Post-review, the proposal is submitted to the PlanetPlay Board of Directors.
  • Board Approval: The PlanetPlay Board of Directors will vote to approve the project, if it meets all the criteria we have set. Upon approval, we will start to work on the project with maximum efficiency.

How does PlanetPlay monitor projects once they begin?

Monitoring is continuous, encompassing:

  • Weekly updates and monthly reports from project developers.
  • Site visits by our leadership team.
  • Independent verification through recognised bodies like Gold Standard.
  • Regular reviews and comparisons to market best practices in order to check progress and identify any issues early.

If a project isn't performing, we step in to resolve problems quickly. If challenges cannot be solved, we withdraw support.

Which environmental projects does PlanetPlay currently support?

Our donations support critical projects like affordable clean energy, reforestation, renewable energy, and water conservation. Our roster of amazing partners includes:

The Green.Earth Hongera Energy Efficient Cookstoves Project:  Open fire cooking is both fuel intensive and hazardous to health. The Green.Earth Hongera Energy Efficient Cookstoves Project is working to resolve this issue in Kenya through the production and provision of clean cookstoves. Requiring much less fuel wood, each energy efficient stove is designed to reduce exposure to harmful smoke while recording a certified offset in CO2 emissions. Find out more.

The Teeny Tiny Truth:  The Teeny Tiny Truth project is an initiative of WAI Wanaka focused on reducing the influx of micro-plastics into New Zealand's fresh water systems. Taking a whole-of-basin approach, they encourage, utilise and facilitate science (including planning, research and monitoring), community action and educational projects and programmes relating to these purposes. Abundant Village:  Abundant Village addresses the greatest challenges facing under-resourced communities in South Africa by breaking cycles of scarcity and planting seeds of abundance. Through regenerative gardens, project-based learning, and mindfulness programs, it provides safety, nourishment, and education – laying the foundation for true transformation. Find out more.

WithOneSeed:  The first Gold Standard verified carbon forestry program in Timor Leste. WithOneSeed is working with subsistence farming communities to replant their forests thereby creating a carbon store to build local economies, deliver practical education and training in agroforestry and permaculture to create a more sustainable, equal and just world. Measuring Planetplay's Impact

How does PlanetPlay measure its impact through these projects?

Most of our projects issue carbon credits verified by global standards such as Gold Standard. These credits are proof of environmental impact. For projects that don't issue credits, we use other measures such as the number of people reached, educated, or supported, depending on the project.

What is a Carbon Credit?

The ‘tecchy' bit..Carbon credits originated in the 1990s as part of global efforts to tackle climate change by putting a price on carbon emissions. The concept was formalised under the Kyoto Protocol, adopted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1997, which introduced market-based mechanisms allowing countries and companies to offset their emissions by funding verified projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gases elsewhere.

These projects, such as reforestation, renewable energy, or clean cooking initiatives, generate carbon credits, each representing one tonne of CO₂ reduced or removed from the atmosphere. The system was later expanded and refined through the Paris Agreement (2015), which encouraged broader participation from both public and private sectors under international oversight by the UNFCCC and independent standards bodies such as the Gold Standard.

When individuals or businesses buy these credits, they're helping to fund the project and support the environment. Many of these projects also bring wider benefits, such as creating jobs, protecting wildlife, or improving health.

At PlanetPlay, we turn all that climate jargon into something you can actually see. We show your impact as trees saved and a simple way to see how your gameplay helps the planet.

How does PlanetPlay use Carbon Credits?

PlanetPlay works to support high-quality projects that create measurable environmental impact. When a game studio or publisher supports one of these projects through PlanetPlay, they receive a certificate showing the number of credits retired, the project supported, and the verified impact delivered.

For example, our support of the Green.Earth Hongera Energy Efficient Cookstoves Project in Kenya provides clean cookstoves to families, reducing carbon emissions while also cutting household costs and improving health. This project is Gold Standard verified: each carbon credit represents 1 tonne of carbon reduced. Because the project is crowd funded by game studio partners, we retire those carbon credits on behalf of our game studios partners to mark their contribution and as a quantifiable way to address impact.

Where can I see more data about the impact of projects PlanetPlay supports?

The Green.Earth Hongera Energy Efficient Cookstoves Project is registered under the Gold Standard (GS ID 12033) and follows the most recent methodology, Technologies and Practices to Displace Decentralised Thermal Energy Consumption (TPDDTEC) v4.0. This methodology defines how emission reductions are measured, monitored, and verified, including mandatory household usage surveys, sampling, and third-party verification. Gold Standard projects must also comply with its Safeguarding Principles and Requirements, which cover human rights, gender equality, labour, anti-corruption, environmental protection, stakeholder engagement, and grievance mechanisms. These requirements are validated and reverified by accredited independent auditors, ensuring that only measurable and independently confirmed reductions are issued as carbon credits.

What does Gold Standard project verification actually mean?

Gold Standardis a globally recognised certification body established in 2003 by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and other NGOs. It sets rigorous criteria for verifying that climate and development projects, such as renewable energy installations, reforestation, or clean-cookstove programmes, genuinely reduce emissions and create positive social impact.

For platforms like PlanetPlay that support or invest in these projects, Gold Standard verification ensures transparency to players and industry partners. It guarantees that every contribution leads to verified carbon reductions and tangible community benefits, not ‘greenwashing' for marketing purposes.

How can I track the impact of my contributions from PlanetPlay purchases?

You can track the impact of your contributions through updates on our website and within your own profile once you log in to PlanetPlay. We provide annual reports on the projects funded and the progress made on our impact page:https://planetplay.com/gb/how-it-works

The PlanetPlay marketplace also visualises collective impact on a live dashboard, showing the amount of carbon our projects have removed, the equivalent number of trees saved and the total dollars donated.

Carbon credits sound technical, right? We've made it simple. We show your impact as trees saved, so you can see the difference your play really makes.

Here's how we calculate that impact: One tree is estimated to absorb around 0.2 tonnes of CO₂. To offset one tonne of CO₂, we calculate the equivalent cost based on certified project pricing. That means supporting one full tree equates to the cost of offsetting 0.2 tonnes.

From this, we can also show fractional impact — for example:

  • Supporting 0.1 of a tree equals 0.02 tonnes of CO₂ removed.
  • Even a small purchase with a small donation (around $1) already saves nearly half a tree.

In 2024, we published a Green Credentials Report citing flagship projects and explaining partners and outputs. The report describes in detail how profits turn into verified projects in addition to naming project partners.

Planetplay & Sphaira Innovation Ag: Not For Profit Vs. Charity

What does ‘Not-for-Profit' mean?

PlanetPlay is the trading name of our platform and is fully owned by Sphaira Innovation AG ( sphaira-innovation.com), a Not-for-Profit organisation incorporated in Switzerland and governed under Swiss law by its independent Board of Directors.

Sphaira Innovation AG covers all PlanetPlay's operational costs, which means 100% of PlanetPlay's profit after publisher revenue share and transaction costs are donated to certified green projects. These include initiatives like tree planting, reforestation, and clean cookstoves, all verified through theGold Standard for environmental impact.

Our finances are independently audited by EY, ensuring full accountability and transparency. (EY's audit covers financial operations, while environmental verification is conducted separately by Gold Standard).

If PlanetPlay is not a charity, is it just as accountable?

Yes! Sphaira Innovation AG elected to operate as a Not-For-Profit entity (corporation) as opposed to registered charity status so that we can run a self-sustaining business model. This means we don’t need to rely on grants and donations from wealthy individuals, which can sometimes be unsustainable. We share the same mission-driven values as charities, yet our structure means:

No dividends or private gain: all surplus is reinvested into planet-positive work, governed by our board.

Our simple structure means we can run PlanetPlay sustainably and work closely with game studios and other partners. It also lets us act quickly on opportunities, without the delays on approvals and process that charities often face.

A proven sustainable model: we fund our impact work through game sales and campaigns, delivering value to customers and partners rather than relying on grants or donations. This keeps our long-term mission secure, regardless of political shifts or major donor changes. In short, we are a business that behaves like a charity but runs with startup speed.

How do we keep PlanetPlay’s work transparent?

Governance:

Sphaira Innovation AG's Supervisory Board oversees budgets, approves projects, and ensures every decision supports our mission.

Transparency:

We publish regular reports showing how funds are used, from trees planted to cookstoves distributed, with clear data and certification that anyone can verify (see above).

Independent Certification:

Every project we support meets Gold Standard criteria: independently verified, externally audited, and validated on the ground.

Legal Structure:

Sphaira Innovation AG is registered in Switzerland as a non-dividend-distributing Not-for-profit. Its UK subsidiary operates under the same structure and ownership.

How does PlanetPlay collaborate with others?

We partner with game studios, platforms, NGOs, UN organisations, EU Commission, green project developers, academia organisations, trade bodies, governments and many others who share our goals and help us to achieve objectives. Any collaboration must meet the same rigorous due diligence standards as the project we support on the ground. Our current significant partners aside from game studios and platforms include the UN Development Programme (UNDP)and the GREAT (Games Realising Effective & Affective Transformation) Project .

Buying & Checkout

A quick checkpoint before you hit purchase.

What payment methods do you accept?

Right now we accept major debit and credit cards through Stripe. We're working on adding more ways to pay, so watch this space.

Do I need an account to buy?

No, you can check out as a guest. But if you sign up, all your keys live safely in one place and you'll have an easier time managing your orders. (Worth it!)

Will I be charged extra fees (tax/VAT)?

Taxes vary depending on where you live. If there's VAT or tax to pay, it'll show up clearly at checkout. No sneaky surprises!

How many items can I buy at once?

You can add up to 10 items to your cart. Try to sneak in more and the cart will simply say “nope.”

Can I buy multiple copies of the same item?

Yes, but only up to 3 of the same item per account. For rare drops or special promotions, the limit might be even smaller so more players get a chance. Sharing is caring.

Can I resell what I buy on PlanetPlay?

No. Everything here is for your own use. Reselling or bulk buying isn't allowed. We're about powering change together, not flipping keys for profit.

What happens if there's suspicious activity?

If something looks off, we may pause your order, ask you to prove it's really you, or suspend your account. Keep things fair and you'll be fine.

Refunds

Not the most exciting topic, but clarity matters.

What items are eligible for refunds?

Game keys can only be refunded if they have not been claimed or revealed. When claiming your key, you will be prompted to confirm the version, region and platform. Once you accept and reveal your game key, it is no longer eligible for a refund.

How long does it take to receive a refund?

We aim to process refunds promptly, which means within 3 working days and no later than 14 days following our confirmation that the refund will be processed.

How will I receive my refund?

We'll return your refund to the same payment method you used.

Are there items that can't be refunded?

Gift Cards, like Apple and Google Play, are always non-refundable because of vendor rules.

I purchased a game in the wrong region. Can I get a refund or swap it?

We can't swap or refund keys if they're bought for the wrong region. To keep things smooth for everyone, please make sure the region matches your account before you purchase.

How does PlanetPlay handle refunds?

Refunds are always based on what you actually paid with your card. If your order used discounts, coupons or store credits, those parts aren't refunded since they weren't charged in cash.

For multi-item orders, we split discounts, store credits and taxes fairly across everything, so a refund for one item might look a little lower than its listed price. Don't worry, you'll never get back less than you truly paid, and taxes are always included in the refund.

When will I receive my game key?

For released games, you will be able to claim your game key within minutes under ‘My Orders’. For pre-purchases, the timing depends on the publisher. (Link to pre-purchase section). If you're stuck, reach out to us at help@sphaira-i.com

How do I redeem my key?

My key hasn't arrived by email, how do I check the status?

After making a purchase, you will need to claim your key before it’s revealed and sent to you. Check the “My Orders” section under your account, all your games hang out there.

Do I have a time limit for redeeming a key?

Keys don't usually expire, but publishers can sometimes remove unused ones after about a year. Best not to let them gather dust.

Pre-Purchases

When will I get my key?

Short answer: as soon as we're allowed to send them.

When will I receive my game key?

For pre-purchases, it depends on the publisher. If early access is included, you'll usually get the option to claim your key then. Otherwise, we’ll enable the claim button as soon as we can.

Will I get the pre-order content if I purchase it on PlanetPlay?

Yes. Any bonus content advertised on our site is included with your purchase. Sometimes it comes with your main key, other times as a separate one. What you see on our site is exactly what you'll get.

Will I get my key for preload?

If the publisher supports preload, we'll aim to enable key claiming in time so you can be ready on launch day.

The game I pre-purchased has been released and I did not receive my key. What should I do?

Check your “My Orders” page in your account and hit the ‘claim key’ button! Still nothing? Email us at help@sphaira-i.com and we'll sort it.

Regions

Because not all keys work everywhere.

Can I buy a key for a different region?

No. We show you the region available based on where you are. Make sure the region matches your account. For example, don't buy a Europe key if your Steam account is set to the USA. (We beg you).

What if I want to give a gift to a friend in another region?

We don't currently have gifting for games. Regions are set by publishers and listed on each product page. If your friend's region is covered by the same key as yours, they'll be able to redeem it.

Can I use a VPN to buy a key for a different region?

No. VPN use isn't allowed. If you try it, the key probably won't work and we won't be able to refund it. Save yourself the hassle.

I purchased a game while on holiday and the key doesn't work.

Our store detects your location when you buy. So if you pick up a game while abroad, the key will match that region. We can't guarantee it'll work once you're home.

Why are some games available in certain regions but not others?

We'd love every game to be available in every region, but it depends on the publisher. We can only sell in territories where we're licensed to provide valid keys.

Is PlanetPlay legit?

Yes. 100%. All keys sold on PlanetPlay come directly from publishers and developers. We don't resell or recycle keys. Everything here is genuine, secure, and planet-positive.

How do I contact support?

Where can I see my purchase history?

Your full history lives under “My Orders” in your account. Used guest checkout? No worries! Your confirmation email has all the details.

What is Steam?

Steam is free software that lets you buy, manage, and play games on your PC. Most games sold on PlanetPlay are redeemed through Steam with a unique key. Once redeemed, you can download and play whenever you like. Always check the system requirements on the product page before you buy. You can download Steam for free at www.steampowered.com.

Do I need to install Steam to redeem my key?

Yes, most games need Steam. If a game uses another platform, we'll make that clear on the product page.

How can I support PlanetPlay beyond gameplay and purchases?

You can support PlanetPlay by spreading the word, making greener choices everyday, and enjoy game play.
